Nevada Legalizes Parimutuel Betting on eSports by I. Nelson Rose

The real goal is regulation, and saving eSports from itself.

Betting on other people playing video games is different from betting on other people playing football, in one major respect: The National Football League oversees the game to the point where it checks the air pressure in footballs. There is no equivalent organization with eSports.

Even the games are owned by companies. Every few weeks, they change the game. Could betting on football be regulated if the owner of the entire game were to arbitrarily change the shape of the ball every week?

Time For Japan To Ante Up On Casino Legalization by Muhammad Cohen

Last month’s Japan Gaming Congress in Tokyo was fantastic in every sense of the word. Ticket sales were cut off at 500, and I gave my opening remarks as first day chairman of the first day to a standing room crowd. I presented on the Japan’s potential impact on the regional gaming market to end the conference a day later to a lot of different faces. Delegates seemed split roughly evenly between gaijin and Japanese, including national and local politicians, representatives of global casino operators, equipment makers, suppliers, bankers, builders, designers and anyone else that might want a role in multibillion dollar hospitality and entertainment developments in the world’s third largest economy. Bringing IRs to Japan is a dream project that inspires fantasies, including some that eventually must yield to realities for casino legalization to realize its enormous promise.

Proposed FanDuel/DraftKings daily fantasy sports merger challenged by FTC by John Brennan

The Federal Trade Commission on Monday filed a complaint in federal court that puts a proposed merger of daily fantasy sports giants DraftKings and FanDuel in peril.

The key issue is the federal goverment's refusal to buy into the companies' defense of the merger plan.

PA Casinos’ Declining Slot Revenue Hidden By Increases In Table Game Revenue by Steve Ruddock

Pennsylvania’s monthly revenue reports are turning into a broken record five months into 2017.

As was the case in previous months, an increase in table game revenue (+4.4 percent) helped offset the industry’s declining slot revenue (-2.7 percent) in May. But it was not enough for total casino revenue to get out of the red.

In May, total Pennsylvania casino revenue was down just under a percent compared to May 2016.

This week Recode reported murmurs of trouble in D.C. for the proposed DraftKings / FanDuel merger.

Approval was never expected to be a smooth process, something the companies signaled when announcing the merger by forecasting a year-long process for closing.

But, given Recode’s report, I believe regulators are vastly overthinking or fundamentally miscontextualizing the merger.

"How could you forget your swimsuit?" said the big-bellied bald guy to his portly wife. We three and sixty others were lined up to board Southwest Airlines flight 1691, bound for Las Vegas, Nevada, the true center of the known universe, despite what Neil Degrasse Tyson says.

The husband's question made the wife tilt, and then she said something back that made the husband tilt. Meanwhile, the 6'7" guy ahead of me was getting into it with the frizzy-headed boarding-pass collector, and that hold-up was causing the guy behind me to rant out loud, even though he was about to get into a tube that will land in Vegas when it lands in Vegas, no matter what he says or feels.

You Can See Macau's Soaring Casino Revenue, But Don't Be Blinded by Muhammad Cohen

May casino revenue numbers bear out what I saw during a week in Macau: a comprehensive recovery is in full swing. Cotai and the peninsula are both enjoying resurgent gaming volumes, and there are more guests staying longer and coming from further away, thanks to the growth of hotel room supply.

The numbers say Macau’s casino revenue grew 23.7% year on year in May, the highest percentage rise this year, to 22.7 billion Macau patacas (MOP; US$2.8 billion), beating the consensus growth forecast of 17%. For the first five months of 2017, gaming revenue is up 15.8%.

Could we finally get straight answers from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on wagering on sports?

USA Today published a pair of stories about the NFL’s “inconsistency” on gambling and sports betting, something this space has covered at length.

The most interesting news out of those reports (here and here) is that Goodell has a chance to be questioned — under oath — about his league’s stance on gambling.

PA Senate Likely To Act Quickly On Online Gambling Because Of Budget Concerns, Lawmaker Says by Matthew Kredell

A day after the Pennsylvania House of Representatives sent a gambling expansion bill back to the Senate with a couple of major changes, Rep. George Dunbar expressed confidence that the Senate will make a decision on the bill by June 19.

“It won’t be too long, as we have a budget to get done,” Dunbar told Online Poker Report on Thursday in a phone interview. “Gaming isn’t the most important part of it, but it is an important part. I’m sure the Senate is going to be taking it up next week, and I’m also sure it’s not going to get voted on as is. There will be some changes to it. I hope the changes will be minimal.”

10 Fatal Micro Limit Mistakes Standing Between You and Your First 1k Bankroll by Nathan Williams

Poker is not really that difficult of a game when you really break it down. This is especially the case at the micro stakes which have some of the worst players in the world.

So it is always a bit surprising to me why so many people have trouble beating even the very lowest limits online. By this I mean stakes like NL2, NL5 and NL10.

By the time you graduate from these limits you should be able to build up a 1k bankroll. This is a huge and important milestone that allows you to comfortably move up to higher stakes and start making some real money in this game.

Report: Massachusetts Online Gambling Likely To Get Green Light From Special Commission by Dustin Gouker

The Special Commission on Online Gaming, Fantasy Sports Gaming and Daily Fantasy Sports met on Tuesday. Last year, the legislature created the panel and tasked it with generating a report about the industries in its name. (Online gambling is currently illegal in the state, while paid-entry fantasy sports is legal and regulated.)

According to Statehouse News, “most commission members who shared their points of view Tuesday indicated that they would favor the omnibus approach,” to iGaming. That included Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chairman Stephen Crosby, Sen. Jennifer Flanagan and a representative of Senate Minority Leader Brice Tarr,

Horse racing companies win in court over daily fantasy-style game by John Brennan

A 14-page ruling by a California judge will be closely scrutinized by the overall daily fantasy sports industry to see if its impact might be widespread.

U.S. District Court Judge James Otero, of the Central District of California, ruled recently that the entry fees paid by horse race players of the game Derby Wars constitute wagers - making them subject to the Interstate Horseracing Act.

Here's my deeper dive on this interesting ruling:

Pennsylvania Needs The House To Fix The Senate’s Online Gambling Bill by Steve Ruddock

Online gambling legislation efforts are heating up in Pennsylvania, as we head into June and the heart of summer.

The good news is that for the first time, the Pennsylvania Senate passed a gaming package that included the legalization and regulation of online gambling.

The bad news is the Senate bill would handicap the industry with burdensome licensing fees and tax rates.

The tragedy at Resorts World Manila underscores how much damage a deranged individual can do. Details are still emerging, but the attack seems to have been a botched robbery attempt by a mentally unstable person with unclear motives. The discovery of at least 35 bodies on the gaming floor, apparently suffocated in fires set by the marauding gunman, transforms the nightmare into a catastrophe. Investigators will tell the world more about what happened, plus, perhaps, why and how to best try to prevent it from happening again. Along with offering hugs and prayers, sincerest condolences to victims and their families and support to the survivors, let’s try to put the incident in perspective.

2016 was "most monumental year" ever for gaming industry, says AGA President by John Brennan

The audience at last week's East Coast Gaming Conference in Atlantic City surely knew it would get a pep talk from American Gaming Association president Geoff Freeman.

But they may not have expected the level of intensity.

For instance, Freeman declared 2016 to be "the most monumental year in gaming industry history."

The NHL's pending debut of a new franchise in Las Vegas, the NFL's approval of the Oakland Raiders' relocation to the same city, and the election of former casino owner Donald Trump were cited by Freeman as part of what he sees as dramatic trendlines.

Q&A With Gaming Veteran Ben Lee: The Philippine Casino Market Is 'Oversaturated' by Muhammad Cohen

Ben Lee has a reputation for defying Asian gaming’s conventional wisdom. That reputation can obscure Lee’s more important standing as one of the most astute observers of the region’s casino industry. For example, Lee foresaw the “political risks” to Macau in early 2014 while everyone was laughing their way to the bank ahead of a gaming revenue crash that ran for more than two years.

Managing partner at IGamiX Management & Consulting – the name is a derivative of “intelligent gaming executives” – Lee’s experience ranges from vice president of casino marketing for Sands China precursor Venetian Macau to operating partner of leading Saipan electronic gaming parlor Club C. For this reporter, attending the ASEAN Gaming Summit in Manila and meeting with the city’s integrated resort operators indicated that the Philippine casino sector, the fastest growing in Asia last year, continues roaring ahead. Lee, who spoke at the ASEAN conference, shared his view of Philippine gaming in the interview excerpted below.
